How to Restake stETH on EigenLayer: From 2.5% to 7% Yield in 2026

Last Tuesday I pulled up my Lido dashboard and stared at the number: 2.47% APY.

My stETH had been sitting there for eight months, quietly earning its keep. Respectable. Boring. And according to half the DeFi Twitter I follow, completely leaving yield on the table.

EigenLayer changed the math. The same stETH — same capital, not a single extra dollar — can now earn 5-7% total by doing a second job: securing other networks built on top of Ethereum’s infrastructure.

I spent three weeks testing this before writing about it. Here’s exactly what I found, what I did, and where I’d be cautious if I were you.


What Is EigenLayer Restaking? (The 90-Second Version)

Ethereum staking works because validators lock up capital to guarantee good behavior. Mess up, lose your stake. That slashing threat is what makes Ethereum trustworthy.

EigenLayer figured out something clever: other protocols need that same kind of “put your money where your mouth is” security — but building a new validator set from scratch costs billions. Why not just borrow Ethereum’s?

You deposit your stETH into EigenLayer. An operator — a professional node runner — uses your restaked capital to also validate Actively Validated Services (AVSs). These AVSs pay fees for that security. You get a cut.

Same ETH. Two yield sources. That’s restaking.

Why stETH Holders Should Pay Attention

If you’re already on Lido, you’re earning around 2.5-3% APY in staking rewards. That’s the Ethereum base layer doing its thing.

EigenLayer accepts stETH as a deposit. You don’t need to unstake. You don’t need to swap. You take your existing stETH position, deposit it into EigenLayer, delegate to an operator, and your yield profile changes:

That gap — from 2.5% to 5-7% — is real. But it doesn’t come free. Let me explain what you’re actually trading.


The Two Paths: Direct Restaking vs Liquid Restaking Tokens

Before the step-by-step, you need to pick your approach. They’re fundamentally different.

Path A: Direct EigenLayer Deposit

You go directly to app.eigenlayer.xyz, deposit your stETH, and delegate to an operator. You maintain custody (in a smart contract). You can withdraw. You pick your own operator.

Best for: Larger holders who want control, transparency, and direct protocol access.

The catch: No automatic compounding. You manually claim rewards. More active management required.

Path B: Liquid Restaking Tokens (LRTs)

Protocols like ether.fi, Renzo, or Kelp DAO handle the EigenLayer complexity for you. You deposit stETH (or ETH), get an LRT token back (like eETH from ether.fi), and the protocol manages operator delegation automatically.

Best for: Smaller holders, DeFi composability, or people who don’t want to manage operators manually.

The catch: You’re trusting a second protocol layer. Smart contract risk compounds.

Ether.fi currently leads with over $3.8 billion in deposits. Renzo comes in second at ~$2.9 billion. Both work well — I use ether.fi for the chunk I actively DeFi with, direct EigenLayer for the rest.


How to Restake stETH Directly on EigenLayer: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Get Your stETH Ready

If you don’t have stETH yet, you’ll need ETH first. I use Binance to buy ETH, then bridge to a self-custody wallet (MetaMask or similar). From there, go to lido.fi and stake ETH for stETH.

Already have stETH? Great. Move to step 2.

Make sure your stETH is in a self-custody wallet. EigenLayer doesn’t work with exchange-held assets.

Step 2: Connect to EigenLayer

Go to app.eigenlayer.xyz.

Step 3: Deposit Your stETH

Click on “LIDO Staked Ether” in the token list. You’ll see a deposit interface.

Enter the amount you want to restake. You don’t have to restake everything — I started with 20% of my position to test the waters before going all-in.

Confirm the transaction. Gas fees apply (budget $10-25 depending on network congestion).

Your stETH is now in EigenLayer’s smart contracts. You’ll see it reflected in your dashboard.

Step 4: Choose and Delegate to an Operator

This is the most important step. And the most overlooked.

EigenLayer operators are professional entities that run the actual AVS validation work. Your stake is delegated to them — and their behavior affects whether you get slashed.

What to look for in an operator:

I use operators from established node providers (Figment, Chorus One, P2P.org) rather than anonymous ones. Lower yield ceiling, much lower drama.

Confirm the delegation transaction.

Step 5: Monitor and Claim Rewards

Check your dashboard weekly. Rewards accumulate in EIGEN tokens and AVS-specific tokens. You claim manually.

This is honestly the most tedious part of direct restaking. If you hate manual claiming, Path B (LRTs) handles this automatically.


The Real Risk Section (Read This)

I’m not going to bury this in footnotes.

Slashing Risk

If the operator you delegate to behaves maliciously or breaks the rules of an AVS they’re validating, your staked ETH can be slashed. You could lose 3-5% of your restaked position in a worst-case scenario.

This isn’t theoretical. EigenLayer launched its full slashing mechanism in 2025. The protocol has teeth now.

Mitigation: Choose established operators. Use Unique Stake-enabled operators. Don’t put all your stETH into a single high-yield, high-risk operator.

Smart Contract Risk

Your stETH is held in EigenLayer’s smart contracts. If there’s a bug, an exploit, or an upgrade gone wrong, you’re exposed. EigenLayer has been audited multiple times, but no audit is a guarantee.

If you go the LRT route (ether.fi, Renzo, etc.), you’re adding another layer of smart contract risk. Double the protocols, double the surface area.

Liquidity Risk

Withdrawals from EigenLayer aren’t instant. There’s an unbonding period — currently around 7 days for LST restaking. If you need your capital urgently, restaking locks you up.

The Bottom Line on Risk

I keep my restaked stETH at around 40% of my total ETH position. The other 60% stays in plain Lido staking. The extra yield is real, but so is the complexity. Don’t restake anything you might need in a fire sale.

None of these are “safe.” They’re safer than going to unknown operators directly, but they introduce their own token and protocol risks.

I’d start with ether.fi if you’re going the LRT route — largest TVL means more audits, more eyes on the code, and more liquidity if you need to exit.


The Numbers, Honestly

Let me run the math on a $10,000 stETH position:

Plain Lido staking at 2.5% APY:

EigenLayer restaking at 6% total APY:

That’s a $1,140 difference over three years — before accounting for any slashing events, protocol changes, or token price movements.

Worth it? Depends entirely on your risk tolerance. I think it is for a portion of a portfolio. I don’t think it is for emergency funds or money you’d panic if you lost 5% of overnight.


The Yield Compression Reality (Read Before You Wait)

Here’s something most guides don’t tell you: restaking APYs tend to compress as more capital enters.

When EigenLayer launched, early restakers were earning 8-10% total. That’s fallen to 5-7% as TVL ballooned to $19.7 billion. If that trend continues, waiting another year to enter means you’re chasing yields that are already lower than what’s available today.

AVS demand is also growing — more protocols need Ethereum security, which can push rewards back up. But the “early mover premium” is already partly gone.

The point isn’t to panic-stake. It’s to recognize that the best window to enter EigenLayer probably isn’t months from now when it has $30 billion TVL and AVS competition has normalized rates downward.


What the Community Is Saying

I lurk in three EigenLayer-focused Discord channels and a couple of ETH staking subreddits. The consensus I’ve seen over the past few months:

Common concerns: Smart contract risk, operator selection complexity, and “is the extra 2-3% worth it given slashing risk?” are the top three.

Common experience: Most people who’ve been in EigenLayer for 6+ months report no slashing events and net positive returns. The vocal losses tend to come from people who chased 10%+ APY from unknown operators.

Emerging pattern: The DeFi-native crowd is moving toward LRTs (ether.fi, Renzo) for convenience. Larger holders ($100K+ ETH) tend to use direct EigenLayer for the control.

That tracks with my own experience. I started with ether.fi, moved my larger allocation to direct EigenLayer once I understood operator selection better.


Tax Note

Restaking rewards are typically treated as ordinary income when received. Claiming EIGEN tokens or AVS rewards is a taxable event in most jurisdictions.

Q: Do I need 32 ETH to restake on EigenLayer?

Q: Can I still use my stETH in DeFi while it’s restaked?

Not directly. Once deposited into EigenLayer, your stETH is locked in the smart contracts. If you want composability — using it in Aave as collateral, for example — you need to either keep some stETH outside EigenLayer, or use an LRT like eETH from ether.fi, which is freely usable in DeFi.

Q: What happens if EigenLayer gets hacked?

Your deposited stETH would be at risk. This is the key smart contract risk. EigenLayer has undergone multiple audits and is backed by major institutional node operators, but no DeFi protocol is hack-proof. Sizing appropriately (not your entire ETH stack) is the practical answer.

Q: Is stETH the best LST to restake?

stETH is the most liquid and widely supported, which makes it a safe default. Other LSTs like rETH and cbETH also work. The underlying LST choice is less important than your operator selection once you’re in EigenLayer.

Q: How often do I get paid?

AVS rewards are paid continuously but claimed manually via the EigenLayer dashboard. EIGEN staking rewards follow a similar manual claim model. LRT protocols like ether.fi auto-compound rewards into the LRT token’s price instead.


The Bottom Line

stETH is good. stETH in EigenLayer is better — if you pick your operator carefully and size the position appropriately.

The gap between 2.5% and 5-7% is real, and over years it compounds into significant money. But so does the risk if you delegate to a sketchy operator or put your entire stack in without understanding the slashing mechanics.

My approach: 40% of my ETH exposure is in EigenLayer (split between direct delegation and ether.fi). The rest stays in plain Lido staking. That ratio gives me enough extra yield to matter without betting the whole position on restaking going smoothly.
