EigenLayer lets you use your already-staked ETH to secure additional networks and protocols — called Actively Validated Services (AVS) — on top of the Ethereum base layer.
Think of it like this: you already deposited your ETH as security collateral for Ethereum validators. EigenLayer asks, “Can we also use that same collateral to secure our oracle network? Our bridge? Our data availability layer?” You say yes, they pay you extra yield for the added security.
Your ETH is doing two jobs at once.
As of April 2026, EigenLayer has over $15 billion locked in the protocol — this isn’t an experimental niche play anymore. It’s mainstream Ethereum infrastructure.

Why Your 3.3% Lido Yield Leaves Money on the Table
Lido stETH is the cleanest way to stake ETH without running your own validator. You deposit ETH, receive stETH (a liquid token that appreciates against ETH as rewards accrue), and earn approximately 3.2–3.5% APY as of April 2026 (after Lido’s 10% protocol fee).
That’s fine yield for a savings account. But if you’re willing to accept slightly more protocol complexity (not risk, I’ll explain the difference), EigenLayer layers on top of that:
- Base Lido staking: ~3.3% APY
- EigenLayer AVS rewards: ~1.5–2.5% additional APY
- Blended total: ~4.8–6% APY (as of April 2026; rates fluctuate)
The kicker? You don’t sell your stETH. You don’t lock it up in a new protocol. You restake through EigenLayer, keep your stETH, and earn the extra yield on top.

How to Restake stETH on EigenLayer: Step-by-Step
There are two ways to restake. Most people should use LST restaking (Method 1). Native restaking requires running a validator (32 ETH minimum, server uptime, etc.) — skip that unless you’re already doing it.
Method 1: LST Restaking (Any Amount, Beginner-Friendly)
What you need: stETH in a Web3 wallet (MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, or similar), plus a small amount of ETH for gas (~$3–8 per transaction at normal gas prices).
Step 1: Get stETH If you don’t have stETH yet, go to stake.lido.fi and stake your ETH. You receive stETH 1:1 (minus Lido’s fee). You can also buy ETH on Binance and bridge it to your wallet.
Step 2: Connect to EigenLayer Go to app.eigenlayer.xyz. Connect your wallet and accept the Terms of Service (you’ll sign a message, no gas required).
Step 3: Deposit stETH In the dashboard, select stETH from the supported token list. Enter the amount you want to restake and confirm the deposit transaction. Gas is roughly 0.0002 ETH.
Step 4: Choose an Operator This is the most important step. Go to the Operator tab and select a node operator to delegate your restaked position to. Look for:
- Track record: How long have they been operating?
- AVS count: More AVS = more yield potential, but more slashing exposure
- Commission rate: Most charge 5–15%
Popular operators include P2P.org, Figment, and Everstake. I personally use a mid-tier operator with 8 AVS and ~6% total APY. I avoided the max-AVS operators — the yield difference wasn’t worth the extra slashing surface.
Step 5: Delegate and Confirm Click Delegate, sign the transaction, and you’re done. Rewards accrue over time; you can claim them periodically.
Total time: About 10 minutes if you already hold stETH.
Method 2: Native Restaking (Advanced, 32 ETH+)
If you run your own Ethereum validator, you can redirect your validator’s withdrawal credentials to an EigenLayer EigenPod. This makes your natively staked ETH eligible for AVS rewards directly.
The process involves creating an EigenPod on EigenLayer’s app, then using the ethdo CLI (or your consensus client’s interface) to update withdrawal credentials. It’s technical but well-documented in EigenLayer’s official docs.

EigenLayer APY: What You Can Actually Expect
Let me be direct about the numbers, because a lot of articles in this space throw around ranges that are either outdated or wildly optimistic.

The upper range (6%+) is achievable but requires choosing operators running 10+ AVS — which comes with meaningfully higher slashing risk. The lower range (~5%) is more typical for a conservative operator choice.
EigenLayer also has its own EIGEN token staking rewards, which some operators distribute. These can temporarily inflate APY but aren’t included in the figures above since EIGEN price adds another variable.
The Real Risks (Not the Scary Version, the Honest One)
This is what the guy in Canggu explained to me, and it’s what I appreciate: restaking risks are real but manageable. They’re also different from what most people assume.
1. Slashing risk — the one people worry about most If your chosen operator misbehaves on an AVS (double-signing, going offline during a critical window, etc.), a portion of your restaked ETH can be “slashed” — confiscated as a penalty.
In practice: EigenLayer has a veto committee that can review slashing events before they’re finalized. Major slashing events on well-known operators have been rare. But “rare” isn’t zero.
My approach: Delegate to established operators with public track records. Avoid operators running unaudited or brand-new AVS.
2. Smart contract risk EigenLayer’s contracts are audited, but all smart contracts carry some probability of bugs. The more AVS an operator participates in, the more smart contract surface you’re exposed to.
3. Liquidity risk When you want to unstake from EigenLayer, there’s a 7-day withdrawal period for LST tokens. Your stETH isn’t locked forever, but it’s not instant either.
I keep ~60% of my ETH stack as plain stETH on Lido for this reason — if I need to move fast, I can.
4. This is not financial advice Genuinely: I’m a guy managing passive income from Bali. What works for my risk tolerance may not work for yours. Don’t put money into this that you need liquid tomorrow.
